Empty Bowls Dothan Project

Empty Bowls Dothan Logo

Empty Bowls Dothan 2017 brought in $4,360 to benefit the Food Bank. While that is wonderful, our goal was to sell all 600 bowls. There are still bowls on display at the Cultural Arts Center for those of you who missed Empty Bowls Dothan. Please stop by the Cultural Arts Center before the end of February to buy your $10 bowl and feed a family!

What is The Empty Bowls Project?

The Empty Bowls Project was started by potters in North Carolina to aid in local hunger prevention. The concept is for area potters to make and donate soup bowls for a fundraiser. On event day, the bowls are sold to the public. Along with the bowl, the person receives a simple meal, with all the proceeds going to an area hunger prevention agency. Patrons are served a meager meal of soup, bread, and water, and are encouraged to remember those who are forced to eat meagerly, if at all, every day. Since its inception, the project has been embraced by potters in communities all over the world.

What is Empty Bowls Dothan?

Empty Bowls Dothan is an effort to help alleviate hunger in the Wiregrass.

On Feb. 3,  2018, at The Cultural Arts Center, bowls created and donated by the community will be offered for sale. For $10 each, attendees will receive a bowl of their choice and a basic meal of soup, bread, and water. All funds raised from the sale of the bowls will go to the Wiregrass Area United Way Food Bank.

How is the Cultural Arts Center involved?

The majority of the bowl-making sessions are held at the CAC in order to showcase what a wonderful community resource the center is and to offer the community “hands on” access to its benefits. Also, the CAC will house the Empty Bowls Dothan event and the art show that accompanies the fundraiser. All of the artisans involved in the show support Empty Bowls Dothan and the Cultural Arts Center. Proceeds generated from the art show will benefit the CAC and its pottery classes, available at the center on an ongoing basis.

How can your group help?

You can help by scheduling a group workshop with Empty Bowls Dothan. We need bowl makers –  no experience required! During your session, a representative will meet with your group, explain the Empty Bowls project, and assist participants in hand-building pottery bowls to be donated for the February event. For all workshops, the materials will be provided at no cost to the group thanks to our presenting sponsor, Five Star Credit Union.
